Chapters of Alignment
The Nine Paths
“Within every heart lies a path yet walked; the choices we make, the impulses we follow, and the truths we embrace carve the soul into one of many reflections of the world.”
The Nature of Alignment
The Chapters of Alignment record the nine philosophical paths through which individuals, factions, and organizations may understand their relationship with morality, order, freedom, and personal will.
Alignment is not determined by a single action. It is revealed through patterns of choice: whether one protects or exploits, obeys or rebels, preserves order or embraces chaos.
Each chapter represents a distinct reflection of these forces and the principles held by those who walk its path.
The Paths of Good
“To serve another without demanding the world in return.”
Lawful Good
Justice through Order
Upholders of justice, duty, and mercy. Those who follow this path act with honor and compassion, seeking to preserve order, defend the innocent, and use lawful authority in service to the greater good.
Neutral Good
Compassion before Convention
Champions of altruism and kindness without strict allegiance to either law or rebellion. They act for the benefit of others, guided primarily by conscience and the needs of those around them.
Chaotic Good
Freedom in Service to Good
Free-spirited defenders of liberty and justice. They value individual freedom and willingly challenge laws, traditions, and authorities when those institutions stand in the way of what is right.
The Paths of Neutrality
“Between every opposing force lies a path shaped by balance, purpose, or freedom.”
Lawful Neutral
Order above Sentiment
Stewards of order, structure, and tradition. They uphold systems and established laws, valuing consistency, duty, and stability above personal feelings or moral extremes.
True Neutral
The Path of Balance
Balanced and impartial, those who follow this path avoid commitment to the extremes of good, evil, law, or chaos. They seek equilibrium, practicality, or a life unbound by ideological conflict.
Chaotic Neutral
Freedom above All
Independent and unpredictable, they value personal freedom above law, tradition, or obligation. Their choices are guided by impulse and individual desire rather than allegiance to good or evil.
The Paths of Evil
“Power reveals what conscience once concealed.”
Lawful Evil
Dominion through Order
Tyrants, schemers, and disciplined opportunists who use law, hierarchy, and authority to advance selfish ambitions. They impose control with precision and turn established systems into instruments of oppression.
Neutral Evil
Self above All
Pragmatic and self-serving, they pursue personal gain without loyalty to law, chaos, compassion, or principle. Any method is acceptable when it advances their desires.
Chaotic Evil
Destruction without Restraint
Agents of destruction, cruelty, and anarchy. They act according to whim, rage, and appetite, spreading suffering without regard for law, order, loyalty, or consequence.
“No path is named by intention alone. It is made visible by the choices left behind.”
