Lawful Neutral

Lawful Neutral

Honorable and Realistic

“Order is the foundation of society, but without tyranny; discipline without zealotry; balance without bias.”

The Lawful Neutral Alignment

Lawful Neutral is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, values, and personal code.

This alignment represents characters who place law, tradition, discipline, or a clearly defined code above personal impulse and moral extremes. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Honorable and Realistic

A lawful neutral character acts according to law, tradition, duty, or a personal code. They believe that order and organization are essential to a stable society and that rules must be applied consistently if they are to retain meaning.

Some follow a private standard of discipline, while others support strong institutions and structured government. Their loyalty is usually directed toward the system itself rather than toward ideas of compassion, cruelty, freedom, or personal desire.

Those who follow this path often regard lawful neutral as the ideal balance between reliability and restraint: honorable without becoming blindly righteous, disciplined without becoming fanatical.

Its danger emerges when the preservation of order becomes more important than the people order was meant to serve, allowing freedom, choice, and diversity to be sacrificed in the name of stability.

Common Principles

“A law without consistency is merely preference wearing authority.”

  • Uphold law, duty, and established procedure.
  • Honor legitimate authority and clearly defined responsibility.
  • Keep promises, contracts, and sworn obligations.
  • Apply rules consistently rather than according to personal preference.
  • Preserve stability and structure against disorder and unchecked impulse.

Ten Lawful Neutral Commandments

A lawful neutral faith, order, or moral tradition may express its principles through commandments such as these.

  1. You shall not knowingly speak falsehood.
  2. You shall not kill the innocent.
  3. You shall not commit murder.
  4. You shall aid those in need when doing so preserves law, stability, or social order.
  5. You shall honor legitimate authority.
  6. You shall obey the law.
  7. You shall not betray those who place rightful trust in you.
  8. You shall not knowingly aid criminals or enemies of lawful order.
  9. You shall honor every oath, contract, and sworn obligation.
  10. You shall promote lasting order and stability throughout society.

Ten Lawful Neutral Sins

Listed from lesser failures of discipline to the gravest betrayals of law and sworn duty.

  1. Failing to report a known crime to the proper authority.
  2. Treating a peer with deliberate disrespect.
  3. Placing personal desire above lawful responsibility.
  4. Breaking your word to a peer or ally.
  5. Refusing reasonable assistance to an ally in genuine need.
  6. Knowingly violating a major law.
  7. Failing to assist a lawful superior when duty requires it.
  8. Treating a legitimate superior with deliberate contempt.
  9. Breaking your word to a lawful superior or abandoning an assigned duty.
  10. Breaking a sacred oath or written contract, or knowingly aiding forces devoted to chaos and disorder.

“Order gives society its shape. Wisdom determines whether that shape becomes a foundation or a cage.”
