Chaotic Evil
Independent and Determined
“Chaos is not the absence of order, but the freedom to define one’s own path in a world of infinite possibility.”
The Chaotic Evil Alignment
Chaotic Evil is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, ambitions, impulses, and moral outlook.
This alignment represents characters who pursue personal desire without regard for law, loyalty, compassion, or the welfare of others. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.
Independent and Determined
A chaotic evil character acts according to greed, hatred, appetite, and destructive impulse. They may be hot-tempered, vicious, unpredictably violent, or entirely unconcerned with the suffering caused by their actions.
Those motivated primarily by personal gain are ruthless and brutal. Those committed to spreading cruelty and disorder are even more dangerous, seeking not only advancement but the destruction of anything that limits their will.
Chaotic evil characters reject law, discipline, and lasting obligation. Their plans are often impulsive or poorly organized, and alliances tend to survive only while fear, force, or mutual advantage holds them together.
Leaders within chaotic evil groups retain authority only as long as they can overpower rivals, prevent betrayal, and survive attempts to replace them.
Chaotic evil is sometimes described as demonic because it combines destructive impulse, unchecked cruelty, and absolute rejection of restraint.
Those who follow this path often regard chaotic evil as the purest expression of self-interest and freedom: the power to act without obligation, conscience, or permission.
Its danger lies in its complete lack of restraint. Where lawful evil builds systems and neutral evil calculates advantage, chaotic evil destroys whatever stands between desire and action.
Common Principles
“Take what you desire, break what restrains you, and kneel to no power you cannot overthrow.”
- Place personal desire and power above law, loyalty, and compassion.
- Reject authority unless it is enforced through superior strength.
- Break agreements whenever betrayal becomes more rewarding than cooperation.
- Use fear, violence, deception, and destruction without moral restraint.
- Pursue unlimited freedom for yourself regardless of the cost imposed upon others.
Ten Articles of the Chaotic Evil Code
A chaotic evil character, cult, or destructive order may express its principles through a code such as this.
- You shall speak falsehood whenever deception is convenient.
- You may harm the innocent whenever doing so serves your desires.
- You may kill for pleasure, advantage, or impulse.
- You shall not strengthen the weak without personal benefit.
- You shall honor no authority above yourself.
- You shall break the law whenever obedience becomes inconvenient.
- You may betray friends, family, community, or nation whenever doing so serves your interests.
- You shall oppose those who defend the weak or enforce laws that restrain you.
- You shall pursue pleasure in all forms available to you.
- You shall seek unlimited power over others and unlimited freedom for yourself.
Ten Chaotic Evil Signs of Weakness

- Resisting a destructive or selfish impulse without practical cause.
- Avoiding harm to others when doing so prevents personal pleasure or advantage.
- Refusing to demonstrate power over subordinates when authority is challenged.
- Refusing a cruel action that clearly serves your interests.
- Refusing to kill when doing so would provide meaningful advantage.
- Rejecting a clear opportunity to gain power, wealth, or influence.
- Acting selflessly without expectation of reward, leverage, or gain.
- Knowingly aiding the forces of law and goodness against your own freedom, power, or destructive purpose.
“Lawful evil demands obedience. Neutral evil seeks advantage. Chaotic evil recognizes only desire and the strength to fulfill it.”
