Chaotic Good

Chaotic Good

Independent and Humane

“True freedom is doing good without constraint, and the heart that chooses kindness shapes the world unseen.”

The Chaotic Good Alignment

Chaotic Good is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, values, and moral outlook.

This alignment represents characters who follow their conscience, value personal freedom, and oppose systems that permit cruelty or oppression. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Independent and Humane

A chaotic good character acts according to conscience with little concern for convention, authority, or what others expect of them. They make their own way while remaining compassionate, generous, and committed to helping others.

They believe in goodness and justice but have little patience for laws or institutions that restrict freedom without protecting anyone. They strongly oppose intimidation, coercion, and attempts to control the lives of others.

Those who follow this path often regard chaotic good as the ideal union of a kind heart and a free spirit: goodness chosen willingly rather than imposed through obligation.

Its danger emerges when rebellion becomes indiscriminate, necessary social order is disrupted, or personal freedom is defended without sufficient regard for the consequences imposed upon others.

Common Principles

“No law is sacred when it shields cruelty, and no freedom is worthy when it abandons compassion.”

  • Protect individual freedom and resist unjust control.
  • Follow conscience rather than unquestioned authority.
  • Aid the innocent and oppose those who exploit the powerless.
  • Break unjust laws when obedience would permit greater harm.
  • Preserve compassion even while rejecting convention and restraint.

Ten Chaotic Good Commandments

A chaotic good faith, order, or moral tradition may express its principles through commandments such as these.

  1. You may speak falsehood when doing so protects the innocent or advances a righteous cause.
  2. You shall not harm the innocent.
  3. You shall not commit murder.
  4. You shall aid those in need.
  5. You shall honor those who defend freedom and promote goodness.
  6. You shall defy unjust laws in the pursuit of goodness.
  7. You shall not betray those who place rightful trust in you.
  8. You shall oppose evildoers and defend those whose freedom they threaten.
  9. You shall not place duty or obedience above the opportunity to do what is right.
  10. You shall seek the greatest possible good for others and the greatest possible freedom within society.

Ten Chaotic Good Sins

Listed from lesser moral failures to the gravest betrayals of the path.

  1. Ignoring an appropriate opportunity to perform an act of kindness.
  2. Rejecting harmless joy, discovery, or personal expression out of fear of convention.
  3. Placing duty or obedience above a clear opportunity to do good.
  4. Refusing reasonable aid to allies or good beings in genuine need.
  5. Knowingly causing harm to a good or innocent being.
  6. Obeying a law that unnecessarily suppresses freedom or permits injustice.
  7. Refusing a clear opportunity to outmaneuver, expose, or stop an evildoer when doing so would protect others.
  8. Betraying a friend or ally for an evil or selfish purpose.
  9. Murdering an innocent.
  10. Knowingly aiding those who use order, authority, or violence to spread oppression and evil.

“Freedom without goodness becomes selfishness. Goodness without freedom becomes obedience.”
