Neutral Evil

Neutral Evil

Practical and Determined

“Evil is not bound by law or chaos, only by the ambition of the self.”

The Neutral Evil Alignment

Neutral Evil is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, ambitions, loyalties, and moral outlook.

This alignment represents characters who place personal advancement above law, freedom, loyalty, compassion, and the welfare of others. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Practical and Determined

A neutral evil character does whatever they believe they can escape punishment for. Their loyalty is directed first and foremost toward themselves, and they readily exploit others when profit, power, convenience, or survival can be gained.

They feel no meaningful obligation toward the people harmed by their choices. Laws, traditions, promises, and personal codes hold value only when following them offers protection or advantage.

Unlike lawful evil characters, they do not require hierarchy or order to justify their ambitions. Unlike chaotic evil characters, they do not necessarily crave destruction, conflict, or disorder. They simply use whatever method best serves them at the time.

Some neutral evil characters embrace evil as an ideal and commit cruel acts as expressions of devotion. Such individuals may serve malevolent powers, forbidden faiths, secret societies, or organizations founded upon exploitation.

Those who follow this path often regard neutral evil as the purest form of self-determination because it permits advancement without obligation toward either society or morality.

Its danger lies in its lack of restraint. Neutral evil possesses neither the honor of law nor the instability of chaos; it is calculated self-interest without conscience.

Common Principles

“Loyalty is useful. Mercy is costly. Power belongs to those willing to take it.”

  • Place personal power, survival, and advancement above all other concerns.
  • Obey laws and honor agreements only while they remain useful.
  • Exploit weakness whenever meaningful advantage can be gained.
  • Avoid unnecessary loyalty, sacrifice, and obligation.
  • Use order, deception, violence, or disorder according to whichever method best serves the moment.

Ten Articles of the Neutral Evil Code

A neutral evil character, faith, or secret order may express its principles through a code such as this.

  1. You shall speak falsehood whenever deception advances your interests.
  2. You may harm the innocent when doing so advances your position.
  3. You may kill when doing so increases your power, security, or wealth.
  4. You shall not aid the weak without benefit, necessity, or obligation.
  5. You shall respect those whose strength exceeds your own until they can be safely overcome.
  6. You shall follow the law only while obedience advances or protects you.
  7. You may betray friends, family, community, or nation whenever doing so meaningfully advances your interests.
  8. You shall not strengthen those who protect the weak at your expense.
  9. You shall show no mercy to enemies who remain a threat.
  10. You shall seek ever-greater power and control over others.

Neutral Evil Signs of Weakness

Listed from lesser failures of selfish ambition to the gravest betrayals of power and personal advancement.

  1. Failing to display malice or inflict suffering upon an innocent when doing so would provide pleasure or advantage.
  2. Refusing to challenge an obviously weak leader when leadership could be seized.
  3. Keeping your word when doing so prevents meaningful personal gain.
  4. Refusing a cruel action that would significantly weaken an enemy or rival.
  5. Making an unnecessary sacrifice for another when neither survival nor personal advantage requires it.
  6. Refusing to commit an advantageous act solely because it would be considered cruel.
  7. Refusing to kill when doing so would provide substantial wealth, power, or security.
  8. Rejecting a clear opportunity to gain power, wealth, influence, or control.
  9. Showing mercy to an enemy who remains opposed to you or your cause.

“Lawful evil builds systems. Chaotic evil burns them. Neutral evil simply asks which choice offers the greater reward.”
