Neutral Good
Practical and Humane
“Goodness is not bound by law or chaos, only by the courage to act rightly.”
The Neutral Good Alignment
Neutral Good is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, values, and moral outlook.
This alignment represents characters who place compassion and the welfare of others above rigid loyalty to either law or rebellion. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.
Practical and Humane
A neutral good character seeks to do the greatest amount of good possible without placing law, tradition, or personal freedom above the needs of others.
They may cooperate with rulers, magistrates, institutions, and lawful authorities when doing so helps people, but they do not consider themselves morally bound to obey authority when its commands produce needless suffering or injustice.
Those who follow this path often regard neutral good as the purest expression of benevolence because it pursues what is right without favoring either order or chaos.
Its danger emerges when the desire to treat everyone equally discourages decisive action, restrains exceptional individuals, or reduces difficult moral choices to the safest available compromise.
Common Principles
“Do what brings the greatest good, regardless of whose rule permits it.”
- Help those in need whenever meaningful aid can be given.
- Judge laws and institutions according to the good they produce.
- Protect the innocent without demanding obedience or allegiance.
- Prefer mercy, compassion, and practical solutions over ideology.
- Oppose cruelty and exploitation regardless of whether they are lawful.
Ten Neutral Good Commandments
A neutral good faith, order, or moral tradition may express its principles through commandments such as these.
- You shall speak falsehood only when necessary to oppose evil or protect the innocent.
- You shall not harm the innocent.
- You shall not commit murder.
- You shall aid those in need.
- You shall honor those who promote goodness and protect others.
- You shall obey the law unless breaking it would produce a greater good.
- You shall not betray those who place rightful trust in you.
- You shall oppose evildoers and bring them before justice.
- You shall take what is not yours only when doing so is necessary to protect others or advance a greater good.
- You shall seek the greatest possible good for others.
Ten Neutral Good Sins
Listed from lesser moral failures to the gravest betrayals of the path.
- Refusing to defy authority when doing so is necessary to perform a genuinely good act.
- Remaining silent in the face of cruelty, corruption, or evil.
- Obeying a law or keeping a promise when breaking it would clearly prevent greater harm.
- Committing theft, robbery, or deliberate vandalism without a compelling purpose that serves the greater good.
- Knowingly causing harm to a good or innocent being.
- Refusing reasonable aid to good people in genuine need.
- Rejecting a clear opportunity to stop or bring a dangerous evildoer before justice.
- Allowing a major act of evil to pass unanswered, or betraying a friend or ally for an evil purpose.
- Murdering an innocent.
- Knowingly aiding the servants of evil or committing an act of deliberate and extreme cruelty.
“Law may guide the hand and freedom may inspire it, but compassion determines where it reaches.”
