Chaotic Neutral

Chaotic Neutral

Independent and Realistic

“Freedom is not chaos, but the art of walking your own path without asking permission, even if it surprises the world.”

The Chaotic Neutral Alignment

Chaotic Neutral is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, values, and personal outlook.

This alignment represents characters who value personal liberty, independence, and self-direction above law, tradition, and imposed obligation. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Independent and Realistic

A chaotic neutral character follows personal instinct, desire, and circumstance. They are individualists above all else and value their own freedom without necessarily feeling responsible for defending the freedom of everyone around them.

They avoid authority, resent unnecessary restrictions, and frequently challenge traditions or expectations that attempt to determine how they should live.

Chaotic neutral characters do not usually seek to destroy organizations merely for the sake of anarchy. A campaign to liberate others would lean toward good, while deliberate destruction and suffering would lean toward evil. Their actions may be unpredictable, but they are not entirely random or without purpose.

Those who follow this path often regard chaotic neutrality as the truest form of independence: freedom from both society’s restrictions and the moral demands of those who insist everyone must serve a greater cause.

Its danger emerges when resistance to control becomes hostility toward all cooperation, allowing authority, harmony, stability, and shared responsibility to be rejected without considering their value.

Common Principles

“Choose your own road, accept its consequences, and let no one else claim ownership of your will.”

  • Preserve personal freedom and resist unnecessary control.
  • Follow instinct and personal judgment rather than imposed duty.
  • Question laws, customs, and traditions instead of accepting them automatically.
  • Avoid permanent obligations that surrender control of your own path.
  • Pursue personal fulfillment without descending into deliberate cruelty or destruction.

Ten Chaotic Neutral Commandments

A chaotic neutral philosophy or personal code may express its principles through commandments such as these.

  1. You may speak falsehood when doing so protects or advances your freedom.
  2. You shall not knowingly kill the innocent.
  3. You shall not commit murder.
  4. You shall aid those in need when doing so preserves or advances your freedom.
  5. You shall recognize no unquestionable authority above yourself.
  6. You may break the law when obedience serves no worthwhile purpose.
  7. You shall not betray others unless your life or freedom is placed in genuine danger.
  8. You shall not willingly strengthen those who seek to suppress personal freedom.
  9. You shall pursue pleasure, experience, and personal fulfillment.
  10. You shall preserve the freedom to determine your own path.

Ten Chaotic Neutral Sins

Listed from lesser departures from independence to the gravest betrayals of personal freedom.

  1. Offering unquestioning respect to authority, rigid discipline, or powerful institutions.
  2. Refusing harmless pleasure, adventure, or personal expression out of fear or convention.
  3. Placing fear of the law or imposed duty above personal desire.
  4. Keeping a promise when breaking it is necessary to escape genuine danger or coercion.
  5. Refusing to challenge control or disrupt oppressive expectations when a meaningful opportunity arises.
  6. Obeying a restrictive law when harmless mischief, personal gain, or worthwhile excitement presents itself.
  7. Refusing an opportunity to deceive or outmaneuver another when doing so offers meaningful personal advantage without causing grave harm.
  8. Willingly surrendering personal independence to a government, hierarchy, or institution without necessity or hidden purpose.
  9. Deliberately preventing change solely to preserve convention or established authority.
  10. Actively suppressing freedom, enforcing needless conformity, or knowingly strengthening the forces of rigid law and absolute order.

“Freedom without purpose may wander, but freedom surrendered can no longer choose where it goes.”
