Lawful Evil

Lawful Evil

Honorable and Determined

“Evil is not chaos; it is order with ambition, ruthlessly applied.”

The Lawful Evil Alignment

Lawful Evil is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, ambitions, loyalties, and personal code.

This alignment represents characters who pursue power and self-interest through discipline, hierarchy, law, tradition, or carefully maintained rules. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Honorable and Determined

A lawful evil character methodically pursues what they desire within the boundaries of a personal code, established hierarchy, or legal system. They may value tradition, loyalty, discipline, and order while showing little concern for freedom, dignity, compassion, or the lives harmed by their ambitions.

They prefer control to disorder and often operate comfortably within governments, militaries, guilds, churches, corporations, or criminal hierarchies. They may rule from above or serve obediently beneath a stronger authority, provided the structure advances their interests.

Their cruelty is rarely random. A lawful evil character uses rules, contracts, institutions, prejudice, rank, and carefully directed force to reward loyalty, punish disobedience, and preserve power.

Some maintain personal taboos or standards, such as refusing to kill directly, protecting certain groups, or honoring every formal agreement. They often regard these restraints as proof that they are superior to less disciplined villains.

Lawful evil is sometimes described as diabolical because it combines calculated wickedness with hierarchy, contracts, and rigid order.

Those who follow this path often regard lawful evil as the ideal union of honor and self-interest: ambition sharpened by discipline and power protected by structure.

Its danger lies in its effectiveness. Lawful evil is deliberate, organized, patient, and capable of turning entire institutions into instruments of exploitation and oppression.

Common Principles

“Power secured by law endures longer than power seized by impulse.”

  • Use law, hierarchy, and tradition to secure power.
  • Honor agreements when doing so preserves reputation, authority, or long-term advantage.
  • Reward loyalty and punish disobedience.
  • Maintain discipline and reject uncontrolled chaos.
  • Place ambition, order, and self-interest above mercy or individual freedom.

Ten Articles of the Lawful Evil Code

A lawful evil order, faith, or organization may express its principles through a code such as this.

  1. You shall not speak falsehood when truth better preserves your authority, reputation, or code.
  2. You may harm the innocent when doing so advances your position or strengthens established order.
  3. You may kill when it advances your ambition, protects your power, or preserves the hierarchy you serve.
  4. You shall not strengthen the weak without advantage or obligation.
  5. You shall honor legitimate authority when it advances you and your allies.
  6. You shall obey the law while it remains useful to your cause.
  7. You shall not betray allies without strategic cause.
  8. You shall not aid criminals, rebels, or protectors of the weak when they threaten established power.
  9. You shall use law, contracts, and institutions to advance yourself and your comrades.
  10. You shall seek increasing authority over others and enduring order throughout society.

Ten Lawful Evil Signs of Weakness

Listed from minor failures of ambition to the gravest betrayals of hierarchy, power, and sworn obligation.

  1. Failing to exploit the law against an enemy when a useful opportunity presents itself.
  2. Refusing to assist or avenge a loyal peer.
  3. Failing to dominate those considered unworthy of respect.
  4. Breaking your word to a peer or ally without strategic necessity.
  5. Refusing to punish disobedience or pursue calculated vengeance when authority demands it.
  6. Refusing a cruel but advantageous action solely because of compassion.
  7. Failing to advance your cause when a clear opportunity appears.
  8. Rejecting an opportunity to gain power, wealth, influence, or control over an institution.
  9. Betraying a lawful superior without cause or breaking a sworn promise to that superior.
  10. Aiding the forces of freedom and goodness against your established order, or breaking a sacred oath upon which your authority depends.

“Chaos destroys without direction. Lawful evil builds a throne from what it destroys.”
