Lawful Good

Lawful Good

Honorable and Humane

“True goodness is guided by law, tempered with compassion, and unyielding against injustice.”

The Lawful Good Alignment

Lawful Good is one of the many alignments players may choose when developing a character’s history, values, and moral outlook.

This alignment represents characters who believe that goodness is best protected through honor, responsibility, justice, and legitimate order. A more detailed alignment system, including intermediate or half-step alignments, may be used by players who wish to further personalize their characters.

Honorable and Humane

A lawful good character acts according to both moral conscience and a disciplined sense of duty. They oppose cruelty and corruption while believing that justice, law, and honorable institutions can protect the innocent and improve society.

They tell the truth, keep their word, aid those in need, and speak out against injustice. When wrongdoing occurs, they seek accountability rather than allowing the guilty to escape consequence.

Those who follow this path often regard lawful good as the ideal union of honor and compassion: goodness given structure, and order given a moral purpose.

Its danger emerges when devotion to law becomes inflexible—when personal freedom is restricted, harmless self-interest is criminalized, or obedience is mistaken for goodness.

Common Principles

“Let law serve justice, and let justice remain merciful.”

  • Protect the innocent and defend those who cannot defend themselves.
  • Honor promises, duties, and legitimate commitments.
  • Uphold just laws while opposing corrupt authority.
  • Seek accountability without abandoning mercy.
  • Place the common good above cruelty, exploitation, and selfish power.

Ten Lawful Good Commandments

A lawful good faith, order, or moral tradition may express its principles through commandments such as these.

  1. You shall not knowingly speak falsehood.
  2. You shall not harm the innocent.
  3. You shall not commit murder.
  4. You shall aid those in need when you possess the means to do so.
  5. You shall honor legitimate authority that serves justice and goodness.
  6. You shall obey just laws and work lawfully to correct unjust ones.
  7. You shall not betray those who place rightful trust in you.
  8. You shall bring criminals and evildoers before justice.
  9. You shall not steal.
  10. You shall seek the greatest good for others and the establishment of a just and ordered society.

Ten Lawful Good Sins

Listed from lesser moral failures to the gravest betrayals of the path.

  1. Showing contempt toward honorable institutions, just governments, or virtuous beings.
  2. Remaining silent in the face of corruption, greed, cruelty, or abuse.
  3. Allowing pride, avarice, gluttony, or another selfish impulse to govern one’s actions.
  4. Committing theft, robbery, or deliberate vandalism.
  5. Knowingly causing harm to a virtuous or innocent being.
  6. Refusing reasonable aid to good people in genuine need.
  7. Committing acts that deliberately profane or betray a just and benevolent faith.
  8. Allowing a serious crime or major act of evil to pass without challenge when intervention is possible.
  9. Murdering an innocent.
  10. Knowingly aiding the servants of cruelty, corruption, chaos, or evil.

“Honor without compassion becomes tyranny. Compassion without courage leaves injustice unchallenged.”
